I'm working on a poster for the Coterie Theater in Kansas City. The play is called the Greek Mythology Olympiaganza Tour and the characters are made out of found objects. (Army men, toothpicks, junk scraps, & the likes. Everything is projected with light & the shadows set the scene.)

I decided to illustrate a handful of Greek mythological characters to use in the poster design.

I illustrated these "bachelors" for a Worst Case Scenario project I'm working on. Each potential date has a bit of a shortcoming, & different ways to escape from the bad date with step-by-step instructions are offered. Feast your eyes on these hunks:

Personal Monogram

I designed a monogram from my initials to match my design style. I looked for a way to integrate both my illustration and graphics interests. I started by choosing a form for the letters to interact. From there, I worked on different linework styles & mediums. I hit on this type of illustrative texture and it worked for what I was going for. I masked the letterforms over my illustration & had my mark. (Typeface: Caslon)

Inspired by the fake-velvet maroon Bourgeois-esque gloves my mom gave me after I complained about biking to class in December. (As one classmate described them, "Cat, those look like they belong in a 17th century brothel.") Cozy/warm & eccentric/fashionable. Now a staple in my wardrobe.

I haven't been illustrating as much as I'd like to this semester. My favorite part of my animation class was sketching out storyboards & character development. Now that we're down to the nitty-gritty of actual animating, I'm having a hard time focusing on getting things rolling. Sooo, in order to keep my sanity in check, I'm finding myself doodling on just about every scrap of paper I come across. & when I'm stuck on a computer, the pen tool on Illustrator becomes my best friend.

I drew this sucker about a year ago. The assignment: Find a way to include these 5 elements into an illustration & have it tell a story:

1) a dog

2) a bird

3) a man

4) a woman

5) a banana

My solution was to have the focus of the illustration be something other than one of the five requirements. (Thus the sweets & desserts overwhelming the composition.)

Let them eat cake.

Animation Storyboards

The water ballet beauties:
I'm allllmost entirely finished with my storyboard. I've created all the elements in Illustrator and I'm bringing them into AfterEffects to animate. If all goes well, I should have a pretty cohesive 60-sec animation by December. The basic concept revolves around a group of satisfyingly plump synchronized swimmers. They're working their magic in the the ocean & it's eventually revealed that they are being circled by a shark. I won't give away the ending. The twist will be revealed when I post my finished project. Hold that anticipation for another 2 months.

My next project in my type class is to write, photograph, and design a book on public typography. I've focused on downtown KC, Westport, the Crossroads District, Plaza, etc. and am narrowing down my topic from there.
